Preserve Memory
Collect photographs, stories, records, and recollections from residents, families, workers, and the Sapele diaspora.
Memories of Sapele is a nonprofit initiative dedicated to preserving the history, identity, and industrial legacy of Sapele while inspiring a renewed future for the town.
We are a heritage-driven civic initiative focused on documenting the people, places, industries, institutions, and memories that shaped Sapele during its years of prominence.
Our work brings together visual archives, oral history, community storytelling, and advocacy to remind people of what Sapele once was and what it can become again.
Our mission is to recall, preserve, and showcase Sapele’s history, especially its industrial and commercial heritage, while encouraging conversations and actions that support the town’s renewal.
Collect photographs, stories, records, and recollections from residents, families, workers, and the Sapele diaspora.
Highlight the factories, river port, power infrastructure, commercial institutions, schools, and communities that shaped the town.
Use history as a foundation for civic pride, public engagement, partnership, and practical urban improvement.
Sapele was more than a town of factories. It was a place of enterprise, skilled labour, river trade, education, social life, and community pride. Its history reflects the wider story of industrial development, decline, memory, and possibility in Nigeria.
By preserving this story, Memories of Sapele seeks to strengthen identity, educate younger generations, and support a serious case for revitalisation.
Memories of Sapele is supported by a Board of Trustees made up of respected leaders, professionals, and community figures committed to preserving Sapele’s heritage and supporting the vision for renewal.
